COALPRO ENVIRONMENT CODE

  1. To ensure that any environmental effects are fully considered before and during all operations relating to exploration, winning, treatment and transport of coal and related products to maximise environmental benefits and minimise any adverse impacts.
  2. To protect and, whenever possible, to enhance the environment and amenities of communities in the vicinity of Members' activities.
  3. To seek at every opportunity to create new facilities and enhance bio-diversity and to protect wherever possible existing wildlife and ecological habitats.
  4. To maximise opportunities to improve the landscape and environment by reclaiming and enhancing areas of dereliction, despoliation and contamination.
  5. To positively respond to new National, Regional and Local environment initiatives, including those of the devolved administrations, such as conservation areas and wildlife reserves, through the working and restoration of appropriately located sites.
  6. To ensure the efficient utilisation of resources by economic and sensitive working of coal and other associated mineral deposits together wherever practicable.
  7. To employ, where practicable, the latest developments in machinery, equipment and site design to minimise the effects on the environment and the amenities of local communities living close to sites.
  8. To promote the highest operational standards for Members' activities and seek to ensure that they function effectively.
  9. To develop and operate, wherever practicable, to standards which are higher than those required by law, regulations and codes of practice.
  10. To adopt and improve procedures so as to ensure a close liaison between the site operators and local communities in order to ensure an effective response to the interests of the community.
  11. To seek to ensure that all employees perform their duties in a manner consistent with this Code.
