The UK Coal Industry is of vital strategic importance to both Britain and Europe. The need for coal is clear. Around one third of the UK's electricity is generated from it and both deep and surface mined coal produced in the UK makes a substantial contribution. In utilising natural indigenous fuel reserves the nation's dependency upon imported gas and coal which are subject to volatile prices is reduced. Indigenous reserves are substantial and more than adequate to maintain a vibrant coal industry for the foreseeable future. The Confederation of UK Coal Producers (COALPRO) is the trade organisation representing most of the deep and surface coal producers. Production of coal in the UK is by far the most efficient in Europe. The coal industry employs over 9,000 people directly and many more in related activities (supplies, plant maintenance, services etc.).
